Wellington cops call in bomb squad Sunday

Police in Wellington called in a bomb squad Sunday night after the owners of a home found an explosive device on a counter in the kitchen, according to Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath.

The home’s owners had asked for police to standby while furniture was moved out of a rental property in the 1500 block of North C. When police were inside the home they discovered the suspicious device.

Heath said his department phoned the Wichita bomb squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Those agencies confirmed the item on the counter was an active explosive that Heath described as "a fish finder."

Fisher finders are explosives with wicks that are thrown on the surface of the water and detonate to stun fish, Heath said.

The device was deactivated and turned over to the ATF. A person of interest was questioned and the device is undergoing further investigation as forensic evidence.

Heath said the case is still under investigation.
