City gets $190,000 for playground materials

The city of Winfield has received $190,000 to cover the costs of materials to rebuild the Island Park Playground. A final settlement ? that would include the cost of reconstruction ? has not been reached.

City officials said it remains likely that a crew working for a general contractor ? and not hundreds of volunteers ? will rebuild the park. The original community-built park was burned down last fall.

A construction crew probably will need six to eight weeks, or more, to rebuild the playground, city manager Warren Porter said. Volunteer crews involved in an intensive build, did most of the work in a week.

City officials have said that an insurance company ? responsible for restoring the playground almost exactly as it was -prefers to pay for a construction company for the rebuild.

The city already has received a proposal for the new playground from an architect and designer that participated in the original project.
