Residents flee from a basement fire Thursday

Some Winfield residents were able to escape their home late Thursday as heavy smoke bellowed from a small fire in the basement of the house, fire officials said.

The fire occurred just after 11 p.m at a home in the 1100 block of E. Fifth. People living in the home noticed the smoke, evacuated the residence and called 911. No one was injured.

Firefighters arriving at the scene reported heavy smoke pouring from the home. Witnesses said a neighbor used a water hose to keep the fire at bay.

Fire officials at the scene said the fire was minor and confined to the basement area of the home. Larges fans were used in an attempt to removed smoke from the house.

An official cause of the fire was not immediately known.
