Playground fire suspect to be back in court

A Winfield teen charged with felony arson in connection with a fire that destroyed the Island Park Playground is due back in court for a pre-trial conference March 10.

Zachary Buhlke was 17 years old when the fire occurred Oct 27. No one was injured. Two younger teens are currently on probation for their roles in the fire that destroyed the community-built park.

Buhlke and the other two suspects were charged as juveniles.

The playground was insured. The city has received $190,000 thus far for the cost of materials. The cost of reconstruction has not been resolved but a crew has begun preparing a new surface on which the playground will be constructed.

A trial date has not been set.
