Winfield officer makes book come to life for students

Chris Tovar, a fourth grader in Sarah Boline’s class at Winfield’s Irving Elementary, recently invited a special guest to help him make a presentation in class.

Sgt. Gary Bortz with the Winfield Police Department visited Chris’ class to help do what is called a book share. Students can make posters or other visual aides to help tell their classmates about a book they have read.

In this case, Chris had a real policeman and a real patrol car to help his classmates understand the book he had read about police cars.

Students were able to look inside the police car and hear Sgt. Bortz describe the various switches and controls. Bortz also answered questions from the students.
