UPDATE: Tornado touches down in Cowley

UPDATE: 5:40 p.m. Storm spotters have confirmed a tornado touched down about five miles east of Winfield some time after 5:30 p.m. Monday.

The tornado was down only for a short time and caused no injuries or property damage, according to emergency management officials.

The tornado came down south of U.S. 160 in an area near the intersection of 192nd Rd. and 151st Rd.

A tornado watch for the area has been extended until 1 a.m.

UPDATE: 5:15 p.m. Tornado warning sirens were sounded in Winfield because a tornado was spotted near Strother Field just after 5 p.m.

Any tornadic activity remained in the sky. A tornado did not touch down.

UPDATE: 1:15 p.m. There is a tornado watch in effect until 7 p.m. for south central Kansas and north central Oklahoma.

The hazardous weather outlook for Monday in South Central and Southeast Kansas calls for a significant outbreak of bad weather. Strong to severe thunderstorms are likely to develop during the afternoon and night.

The primary threat will be golf ball size hail and 70 mile an hour winds. A tornado or two is possible.

Much of Oklahoma should be greatly affected by the severe storms.

Spotters will likely be needed, according to the National Weather Service.

A fed flag warning for a wind advisory is also in effect until 8 p.m.
