Newcomers win BOE seats in AC, Winfield

Winfield school board members Vic McClung and Julie Albright Thompson won reelection to the USD 465 board of education Tuesday but Lyle Weinert wasn’t so fortunate.

All three incumbents finished behind first timer Gail Sawyer who will join the board after garnering 946 votes, or 25 percent of those cast. Thompson was second with 916 votes and McClung was third with 866.

Weinert finished well back with 704 votes and Jamie Hibbs finished last with 343 votes. The top three vote getters earned a seat.

In Arkansas City, newcomer Aaron Watters finished well ahead of four others in the race for three seats on the USD 470 board of education.

Watters had 1,431 votes or 31 percent of those cast, incumbent Joseph Woodard was second with 1,077 and Woodard’s fellow board member, Darren Reese, was next with 1,014. James Steinbacher had 683 votes and Robert Barrett had 383.

Donna Avery was the top vote getter in the race for a seat on the Cowley County Community College Board of Trustees and will retain her seat. Avery garnered 2,373 votes or 28 percent of those cast.

Dennis K. Shurtz finished in second place with 2,166 votes and incumbent Albert Bacastow Jr. was third with 2,016. Lewis Kuchar Jr. finished just behind Bacastow with 1,971 votes. The top three vote getters were elected to positions on the board.

The results are unofficial until vote canvassing is conducted.
