Floodwaters creep into fairground on Tuesday

Floodwaters moved onto the midway at the Winfield Fairground Tuesday, just days before annual Kanza Days festivities are scheduled to begin there.

By 6 p.m., the Walnut River was at 29 feet, well above flood stage of 18 feet. Water had inundated several of the fairground buildings and was expected to rise higher before cresting somewhere around 33 feet, city officials said.

Utility crews were at the fairground late Tuesday raising electrical boxes ? used by campers ? to a point expected to be above floodwaters. A city official said it was unclear if the fairground could be ready by the start of Kanza Days Friday night.
