Swollen Arkansas River slowly recedes Sun.

Swollen Cowley County rivers mostly had returned to normal by Sunday after a week of heavy rains that brought with it minor flooding, according to Bob Frazee, a local emergency management official.

The Arkansas River at Ark City was the only river near flood stage as the weekend neared an end but it was expected to continue its slow fall. The Walnut River at Winfield and Ark City was well below flood stage and continuing to drop.

Cowley 2, or 26th Road, west of Rock, remains closed.

A flood watch for the area has been canceled and dryer, warmer weather is expected Monday. A new round of strong storms is expected by sunrise Tuesday and into the afternoon.
