Go figure: Gas price will keep some at home

Fewer people will be hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend and those who do travel will stay closer to home, according to AAA.

Higher fuel prices and a weak economy are forcing people to scale back and look for other ways to celebrate the official beginning of summer.

Nationally, the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded hit a record $3.80 per gallon, AAA reported. Diesel hit a record $4.54.

Unfortunately, the weather may spoil outdoor plans. Tornadoes hit from California to Colorado, Wyoming and in western Kansas Thursday. The same conditions exist today and may continue through the weekend as rich gulf moisture remains over the area, according to the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorm and flood warnings were in effect this morning for areas in northwestern Kansas. More severe weather is expected in Kansas today. Storm coverage may be more isolated but any storm that develops will quickly become severe with very large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes, the NWS is warning.

Spotter activation is possible during the afternoon and evening hours both today and Saturday across Central and south central Kansas.
