Teen arrested for drinking linked to burglaries

An Arkansas City teen ? stopped on the street for questioning by police Wednesday ? admitted to breaking into a vehicle and a search of his home turned up property linked to other recent burglaries, police said.

Shane Anthony Ternes, 18, was stopped for questioning by police in the 300 block of S. C Street around 2 a.m. after police found a vehicle with a dome light on nearby. Officers determined Ternes had been drinking and during their conversation, Ternes provided information about recent car burglaries.

Police were able to link the young man to at least one burglary and during a separate interview he confessed to breaking into a vehicle in the 400 block of E. Fifth Ave, according to police chief Sean Wallace.

A search warrant was executed at Ternes’s home and evidence linking him to stolen property from another recent burglary was found.

Ternes faces possible charges of consumption of alcohol by a minor and two counts of burglary and theft. The police department expects to connect Ternes to several other burglaries that have occurred throughout the city, Wallace said.
