Campaign to crack down on seat belt violators

Police officers in Winfield will be keeping a more watchful eye out for seat belt and traffic violators during the Click It or Ticket campaign that starts Tuesday and runs through the end of the month, interim police chief Brett Stone said Monday.

The annual campaign ? used to promote seat belt usage ? is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Stone said officers will be aggressively enforcing seatbelt and other traffic laws on city streets and at the city lake.

Kansas law states that anyone in the front seat of a vehicle must being wearing a seat belt and all those under 18 must be buckled in, regardless of where they are sitting in the car. Citations will be issued on the following instances:

When a driver or passenger, age 14 to 17, is seen to be unrestrained that person will be cited. When a person under 14 is unrestrained in a vehicle, the driver will be cited.

Police also remind drivers that children under four must be secured in an approved child safety seat. Children four to seven must be securely belted in to an approved booster seat and children ages eight to 13 must be wearing a safety belt.

It’s also against the law to have children under the age of 14 riding in any part of the vehicle not intended for passengers, that includes pickup truck beds.
