Winfield teen busted near Strother on Friday

A Winfield teen was arrested early Friday morning when Cowley County Sheriff’s deputies saw him driving in an area near the runway at Strother Field that is not open to the public, Undersheriff Bill Mueller said.

Kendall R. Delp, 18, was spotted traveling north on a restricted runway-access road at Strother around 2 a.m. Officers pursued the vehicle and found it stuck in a wheat field that the industrial park leases to farmers.

Delp was arrested at 2:40 a.m and released by 10 a.m. on $4,350 bond. He faces charges of driving under the influence, minor in consumption of alcohol, criminal damage to property for damaging the wheat field, transporting an open container and criminal trespassing.

All charges are misdemeanors, with the exception of criminal damage to property which could warrant a felony charge if the damage is extensive enough, Mueller said.

Delp plays baseball for Winfield High School.
