Winfield enrolling 4-year-old preschoolers now

Enrollment for Winfield Public Schools’ pre-school program for 4-year-olds is now underway.

"We encourage parents to get the enrollment packet as soon as possible to be sure their child’s enrollment material is complete and they are ready to start school on Sept. 8," said district Curriculum Director KayLynn Smith.

Any Winfield child who will be four by Sept. 1 may attend pre-school free of charge. Enrollment packets can be picked up at the district office, 1407 Wheat Road, anytime between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday.

Pre-school classes will be held at Webster Early Learning Center and at Irving Elementary.? Morning sessions are from 8 a.m to 11 a.m. and afternoon sessions are from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

This is the second year for the pre-school program. Smith said that nearly 150 4-year-olds attended pre-school classes last year at Webster, Irving, and Lowell.

Pre-school teachers use the same reading, math, and handwriting programs that the elementary schools use, making the transition to kindergarten much smoother for children because they’ve had a jumpstart in these areas.
