Officials: Cigarette started deadly house fire

Cigarette smoking is the likely cause of a fire that claimed the life of Jack C. Greever, Winfield fire and police officials said Monday morning.

Emergency personnel arrived at 1315 Ann early Sunday morning after a friend of the Greever family found the man’s body and evidence of a fire. Greever, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene. His death has been ruled an accident.

An autopsy attributed the man’s death to smoke inhalation. The fire actually started in the home Saturday afternoon and burned out due to lack of oxygen, fire marshal Alan Stoll said.

Because the fire eventually went out and was contained mostly to the living room, it was not visible to neighbors or drivers passing through the area.

Stoll said investigators believe the fire was a cigarette smoking incident which involved a couch in the living room.
