State to present evidence in Chambers case

Murder suspect David Webster will be back in a Cowley County courtroom Tuesday as prosecutors attempt to prove there is sufficient evidence for him to stand trial in the springtime death of Winfield’s Diane Chambers.

Cowley County attorney Chris Smith said proceedings are expected to begin at 10 a.m. and should run most of the day. The state is allowed to call witnesses and present evidence to support charges against the defendant.

A judge then rules as to whether Webster will be bound over for trial in the case.

Webster cooperated with police during questionning in the case and led police to Chambers’ body, investigators said at the time his arrest was announced. At his first appearance in April, Webster made attempts to plead guilty but instead was appointed counsel.

Smith said he was not allowed to comment on whether a plea bargain arrangement was being discussed.

Chambers ? who worked at the local JC Penney store ? disappeared in late March and she was found dead April 2. Her body had been discarded near a bridge in rural Cowley County.
