Cowley College sees enrollment jump for fall

Cowley College officials are crediting 2,500 phone calls ? made in June and July ? with helping the school surpass enrollment totals from last year, well before classes start.

The total number of full-time equivalent students at the school stands at 2,424, an increase of 236 from this same time last year. Classes are set to start just over a week from now.

The largest increase is seen at the college’s Bloomenshine Center in Mulvane. Last year at this time there were a total of 327 students enrolled at the Mulvane Center, while this year, there are more than 500 enrolled.

"We are very excited, our classrooms are full and we have been adding additional classes over the past week," Mulvane Center Coordinator Cynthia Jones said. "We are fortunate to have student ambassadors in place to help with enrollment and want to make a positive impact on the community."

The college’s on-line enrollment continues to grow leaps and bounds as it has doubled in size over the past four years and now stands at 679.

On the Arkansas City campus, enrollment has already surpassed the 1,100 mark and is on pace to have its most students in four years. Also, all five dormitories are filled to capacity. However, students can be put on a waiting list in the event a dorm room becomes available.

According to Ben Schears, Cowley College admissions director, during the month of June and the first part of July, Cowley College admissions representatives placed more than 2,500 phone calls to students that were enrolled at the school during the spring and summer semesters.

This, along with planned enrollment days and extended hours in the admissions office, played a large role in the boost in enrollment.

"Reaching out to those students and encouraging them to re-enroll has been helpful," Schears said. "The economy has also played a part as has the two, one-stop centers, we opened in Wichita."
Schears praised the work done by the admissions representatives.
