Ark City teen arrested for incident with shotgun

An 18-year-old Arkansas City man was arrested Saturday and is accused of pointing a shotgun at people during an altercation, Ark City police chief Sean Wallace said.

Nate Thomas faces a charge of aggravated assault and was taken to the Cowley County Jail, where he later posted bond. A second man, Alvaro Dieguez, 18, Ark City, was arrested for obstruction and a county bench warrant.

Officers were called to an area near Fifth and Central streets in regard to an altercation involving a firearm. Thomas and others fled the scene when police arrived but were later apprehended, Wallace said.

The altercation happened in area near the Cowley College dorms and a weapon was found on college property, however, the incident did not involve students of the school.

A passerby observed the altercation that started the incident and told police that Thomas and an unnamed victim in the case were involved in a physical altercation in the street.

Thomas is accused of pulling a gun on the person in which he was involved in an altercation. That person’s name has not been released.

Wallace said the unidentified man found a baseball bat and struck Thomas with it in order to defend himself.
