Son of Cowley coach dies suddenly Thurs.

The oldest son of Cowley College baseball coach Dave Burroughs died unexpectedly at the family’s home Thursday, according to the Arkansas City Police Department. He was 20 years old.

Derek Burroughs was experiencing respiratory and heart failure when officers arrived at the home in the 200 block of East Cedar around 8 p.m. Officers began CPR while they waited for emergency medical crews to arrive. Burroughs was eventually transported to South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Investigators received consent to search and examine the Burroughs’ residence, and found nothing suspicious or of any concern, according to a statement from Police Chief Sean Wallace. Investigators then went to the emergency room where they examined the Burroughs’ body with the guidance of Dr. Aaron Watters.

Investigators found nothing suspicious or of concern. Dr. Watters made a preliminary finding that Burroughs died of a cerebral aneurysm. Family members have agreed to an autopsy.

The autopsy was conducted Friday and results could come as soon as Tuesday.

Derek Burroughs was a student at Cowley College and the son of Coach Burroughs and his wife, Vicki. The couple have four children. Funeral arrangements are pending.
