Students wreck car they’d just helped fix up

They fixed it up, then they smashed it up.

A male student was arrested Monday and faces a charge of reckless driving after crashing a car ? owned by Cowley College ? that students had fixed up as part of a class project. No one was injured in the accident.

The driver has yet to be named because he was a juvenile.

The single-vehicle accident occurred near the East Chestnut Bridge in Ark City when the student lost control of the car during a test drive. An officer at the scene estimated the vehicle was traveling east at speeds up to 80 miles per hour.

The driver lost control, hit a barrier and traveled an additional 100 yards before coming to rest in a ditch.

Students in the college’s vocational-technical programs repair vehicles and test drive them as part of their education, police said. There were three people in the 2001 Toyota Solara, one was a full-time student and the others attend high school in the morning and college courses in the afternoon.

The students involved were authorized to operate the vehicle.

Rama Peroo, a spokesperson for the college, said the school obviously would review the details of the accident and determine what disciplinary action is appropriate.

"Other than that, it’s really up to the police as to what is going to happen," he said.

KSOK’s Shawn Wheat provided information for this report.
