Main break closes part of Main Street Sunday

A water main break in Winfield late Sunday slowed traffic on a portion of Main Street and kept city crews busy well into the night.

The break was reported around 9:45 p.m. when someone called to say that water was emerging from a crack in the road at Fifth and Main. Force created by the rupture was enough to cause a buckle in a portion of the asphalt near railroad tracks that cross Main.

City workers attributed the incident to an aging water line.

It was around midnight before crews actually began digging into the street with heavy equipment to determine the extent of the damage.

Crews were able to repair the main by 3 a.m. and restore service to a few who were without it, according to a city spokesperson. A portion of the road at Fifth and Main will be remained closed for a couple days while the street is repaired.

A city spokesperson said that Island Park and a business or businesses north of the tracks were believed to be the only ones to experience a water outage.
