Stoll: Summer fire on Houston was accident

An August fire at a rental home in Winfield was accidental in nature but fire officials will list the exact cause as undetermined, fire marshal Alan Stoll said.

The blaze at 321 N. Houston killed two pet dogs belonging to Robert and Lydia Buck. At the time of the fire, the Bucks were critical of the owner of the home and the lack of maintenance of the property.

Stoll, however, said the condition of the home was not a factor in the fire. There were no indications the fire was caused by gas or electrical problems ? which he said made it unlikely that an undiscovered leak or shoddy wiring was to blame.

Stoll said his investigation left him positive the fire was an accident that happened while the Bucks were away but he could not pin down exactly what started the blaze.
