Jordan gets jail, probation in Halverstadt case

Gregory D. Jordan was sentenced Monday to a month in jail and probation in connection with an assault case last year that involved Winfield’s Betty Halverstadt, who was later killed in an unrelated incident.

In September, Jordan entered guilty pleas to a count each of aggravated battery and residential burglary. He initially had been charged with rape but Cowley County attorney Chris Smith made a plea agreement because he said pursuing that charge at trial would be difficult without the victim testifying.

Jordan was sentenced to 24 months in prison that he will not serve as long as he completes 18 months of probation without incident, Smith said. He also received a 60-day jail sentence, 30 days of which he will only serve if he violates terms of his plea agreement.

Jordan was to surrender himself Monday to begin serving a month in the county jail. Smith said Jordan also will not be allowed to possess drugs or alcohol or go to clubs or bars during his probation.

Four members of Halverstadt addressed the court prior to sentencing. The case has been difficult for Halverstadt’s family, Smith said.

"It’s been highly emotional for everyone who was involved," he said.

Halverstadt had testified against Jordan at a preliminary hearing, but earlier this year she fell from a bridge on U.S. 77 south of Winfield and died.

Jordan was arrested in July 2008 after Halverstadt accused him of entering her home in the 3500 block of Lakeshore Dr. uninvited and assaulting her.
