WED remodels local plant for General Electric

Winfield Economic Development Inc. is finishing up a $1 million remodeling job that will create additional warehouse space at the General Electric Engine Services plant in Winfield.

The project includes cleaning up and upgrading about 150,000 square feet of space, says Rodger Steffen, chairman of the board for WED Inc. New offices, modernized warehouse space and an improved electrical system is all part of the work, which is nearly complete.

The remodel included some plant space that GE has used in the past.

WED Inc. ? a non-profit organization with an nonsalaried board ? was formed in the mid-1990s in response to the closing of the former Binney & Smith plant at 2000 E. 19th. That plant ? which is where this latest remodeling project took place – was purchased by WED in 1996 and is now leased to General Electric and an another local company.

Steffen said the organization has purchased and upgraded other buildings in town and leased them to local businesses.

Neither Steffen nor city officials were willing to comment as to whether GE was expanding operations or adding any new jobs. NewsCow has a call into officials at the GE plant in Winfield and will let you know what we find out.

City manager Warren Porter did confirm that a project had taken place and that GE had been in search of additional space.

General Electric is one of the largest employers in the county and operates a plant at Strother Field in addition to the plant in Winfield.
