Shell convenience store in Winfield closes up

Handwritten "closed" signs and bagged gas pumps are greeting recent visitors to the Shell station at 15th and Main in Winfield.

The convenience store and gas station ? which is owned and operated by Independence-based Crescent Oil ? closed this week.

Crescent, which supplies gas some to local gas stations and also operates convenience stores, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this year, according to published news reports. That caused issues with some fuel deliveries and kept some stations from accepting credit and debit cards.

JumpStart locations in Winfield and Wellington contract with Crescent for fuel. Staff at JumpStart locations in Winfield said there were no issues with fuel deliveries. They were informed the Shell store closed Monday and likely would not reopen.

Crescent had operated the Shell store off on and in August 2007 took back operations from an operator who had been leasing the store. At that time, a former Crescent executive told NewsCow the company, and many others in the industry, was struggling.

A person taking calls at Crescent offices in Independence this week acknowledged the store closed and referred questions to a company executive. That person did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
