Familiar Ark City murals are set to come down

Familiar window murals in downtown Ark City will be replaced this week as part of an effort to become compliant with a city ordinance passed last year.

The murals ? painted on four-foot-by-eight-foot sheets ? were painted by Cowley College students. They’ve been in place for more than 20 years.

Ark City commissioner Patrick McDonald runs a business in the building where the murals are located and said the paintings were coming down because of stricter window ordinances. McDonald doesn’t own the building, which is located in the 300 block of S. Summit.

The replacement of the windows should be complete by next week, according to the building’s owner. The paintings are included in at least one publication listing the murals of Kansas.

There are a total of 30 murals, some are in a deteriorated condition, while others appear salvageable, according to James Jordan, who produces the blog and news website Ark City Revived. Jordan is currently making an attempt to preserve the murals.
