UPDATE: Stabbing suspect in jail since Sun.

UPDATE: 5 p.m. Monday – A suspect in a stabbing at the N. Michigan trailer court in Winfield has been in the custody of police since late Sunday night, according to jail records and law enforcement officials.

Daniel Dumas, 28, was first booked into the Cowley County Jail at 11:48 p.m. Sunday on a charge of criminal damage to property. On Monday, Winfield police added a charge of aggravated battery ? a level 4 felony.

Dumas has yet to be formally charged and has not made an initial court appearance.

His bail is set at $100,000 and Dumas continues to be held in the Cowley County Jail.

Court officials said Dumas is accused of stabbing Justin West, 25, during a fight at the trailer court at 500 N. Michigan, lot 5.

County attorney Chris Smith said he had limited information in regard to the case and would not immediately issue a comment.

Law enforcement officials said it is not uncommon for a suspect to be held on a lesser charge – or by using a 48-hour affidavit – so that a thorough investigation can take place.

It appears no one is eager to come forward with information that might lead to an arrest in a weekend stabbing in Winfield.

Witnesses ? and even the man who was stabbed during an altercation on N. Michigan Saturday night ? have been reluctant to cooperate with Winfield Police investigators who are trying to determine what happened, police chief Danny Park said Monday.

"We are still sorting out the facts," he said. "The witnesses have been less than forthcoming and even the alleged victim is less than cooperative."

Witnesses approached by news reporters Saturday also indicated they had no information to provide.

Justin West, 25, was taken to Wesley Medical Center by air ambulance early Sunday. He has since improved and was listed in fair condition Monday, according to a hospital spokesperson.

A second man, who is 28, was treated for a blow to the head and later released from William Newton Hospital. He has not been named by authorities.

Police arrived at the trailer home park at 500 N. Michigan just after 11 p.m. because neighbors reported hearing a fight going on outside one of the housing units. A number of people, including a child, could be seen outside the home where the incident occurred but it was unclear who had been inside the home at the time it happened.

A potential suspect in the case was described a black male 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall. That person, however, has not been contaced and no arrests have been made in the case.
