Winfield crews truck snow from Main St. area

City crews in Winfield spent about four hours Monday trucking a considerable amount of snow from the Main St. area to a drainage way in south Winfield.

A decision to remove the snow by truck is made on a case by case basis based on the severity of a particular snow storm, says Russ Tomevi, the city’s public works director. Various estimates indicated between four and five inches of snow fell in the city late last week.

By Monday the drifting snow and snow cleared from the main roadway was piled in the middle of Main and on Ninth. That creates the potential for decreased visibility.

Parking in the downtown area was difficult to use and at least one semi truck became stuck on a pile of snow.

With an inch or two more of snow predicted for late Tuesday and early Wednesday, Tomevi says, the decision was made to remove as much snow as possible along Main and parts of Ninth.

"Once the snow starts to get hard and crusted, and you put more snow on top of it, it becomes difficult to work with," he says. "Now that’s all out of the way."

Tomevi says there is a drainage area east of the city’s wastewater treatment plant and near the broadway sports complex, where the snow is placed to melt away.

City officials could not say how many truckloads of snow were removed but Tomevi says nearly every large dump truck the city owns was used for about four hours Monday evening. The trucks were continously hauling snow away.
