City picks new company to trim Winfield trees

Missouri-based Poor Boy Tree Service has been awarded a city contract to trim and remove tree branches that may interfere with power lines in Winfield, a city official said Monday.

Poor Boy will replace Asplundh Tree Expert Co. – who had done that work here for several years.

Bob Porter, director of the city’s electric and water utilities, said that Poor Boy will be required to have a certified arborist on staff that is familiar with trees in this area. Each year the city attempts to clear about 20 percent of right of way near power lines to cut down on outages.

Tree limbs coated with ice or whipped around by high winds can cause problems for utility customers, Porter said.

Porter said trimming crews evaluate various situations where tree limbs are growing and try to make the best decision about how to proceed in trimming. Sometimes that could mean completely removing a tree.

This would generally be done only after the property owner is consulted so that the matter could be discussed.
