Fire levels vacant home in rural part of county

An isolated and vacant Cowley County home burned to the ground late Tuesday. A cause of the fire has yet to be determined, Winfield Fire Marshal Alan Stoll said.

"What started it?," Stoll said. "At this point, I have no idea."

The home, near the intersection of 212th and 151st, had no one living in it at the time of the fire. In an interview at the scene, Stoll said he was looking for signs that a vagrant or someone involved in drug activity started the fire, but so far had found none.

"We’ll interview anyone who lives around here to see if they’ve seen anything suspicious," he said.

The home had begun falling to the ground by the time firefighters arrived. Once the structure was determined to be vacant, emergency personnel monitored the scene as the home burned.
