Winfield man killed in drilling rig accident Wed

Winfield’s Dale Eastman was killed Wednesday afternoon when a drilling rig he was disassembling made contact with power lines near Blackwell, Okla., according to the Kay County Sheriff’s Dept.

Eastman, 63, received an electrical shock as he used joysticks to lower the rig’s boom. He was still breathing as he was rushed to an area hospital shortly after the incident but later died.

The incident occurred around 1:20 p.m., in an open field about six miles northwest of Blackwell near the interstate. A worker for Eastman Drilling Co., which Dale Eastman owned, witnessed the accident and alerted emergency personnel.

"It appears he just wasn’t paying enough attention," Kay Co. undersheriff Steve Kelley said. "Sometimes when you’ve done something enough, you’re not as careful as you should be. We all do that."
