Local prison escapee sentenced to 9.5 years

A man who escaped from the Winfield Correctional Facility in late November has been sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison, according to the Cowley County Attorneys office.

Wayne Purdy, 31, has entered a plea agreement on a charge of aggravated escape from a correctional facility. He was setenced to 114 months for the crime Monday, county attorney Chris Smith said.

Scott Dwyer, 40, is also charged in the same incident but has yet to be convicted or sentenced.

Purdy and Dwyer had been at the local, minimum security prison for just over a week when they fled around Thanksgiving time. In January, they were arrested in Mississippi.

Before the escape conviction, Purdy was scheduled to be released in 2018. He was originally imprisoned for burglary, theft and arson charges.
