Lease issues led to closing of Movie Gallery

It appears problems negotiating the lease price on its building led to the abrupt decision to close the Movie Gallery location at 13th and Main in Winfield.

Local store manager Ray Caudill said he found out last week that the store would need to close. A liquidation sale started Friday and store closing signs have gone up.

It usually takes between six and eight weeks to shut down a store, Caudill said.

"It was very sudden, we found out on Tuesday," he said. "It was a surprise to us, all I know is it had something to do with the lease."

Movie Gallery recently closed its Wellington location as part of a wave of store closings aimed at helping the company recover from financial struggles.

"Wellington, that was part of a planned shut down," Caudill said. "This wasn’t."
