Sickly raccoons found in Ark City have prompted the city’s animal control unit to issue an alert to the public, especially those with pets.
Animal control offers recently have picked up a several raccoons that were obviously ill. The animals were acting listless, had trouble walking, were pale, drooling and most had white gums.
Some of the animals also may have been feverish.
Animal control officials want citizens to be aware of the issue and are asking people not to come into contact with the animals or attempt to trap them. Pet owners are also advised to make sure their pets are properly immunized.
An immunization mentioned specifically by police was DHLPP – distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza and parvovirus.
If anyone sees a raccoon acting strange and sick, call (620) 441-4448 and leave a message for Animal Control to come and dispose of the animal.??
If after hours, call 441-4444 and the dispatcher will contact someone to dispose of the animal.
