Burden gets help with new painting project

The City of Burden will get a $1,000 county check to help with its downtown facelift efforts this summer.

County commissioners approved the donation at their Tuesday night meeting held in the county courthouse.

Burden City Clerk Lorri Lowe attended the meeting and spoke with commissioners. She said several structures downtown need their facades painted, while others just need touch-ups. The sprucing up is part of a local project called "Paint the Town." Lowe said locals seem excited at the prospect of the new look and hope to be finished with the work by fall, in time for Burden’s annual community celebration.

"Already people are planting flowers out in front of their buildings," Lowe said.

Total cost for the painting project is estimated at $5,000. Lowe sought help from the county because of the high price tag on paint.

Commissioners were supportive of the plan. County Commissioner Dick Bonfy suggested a new paint job downtown might encourage everyone to get their yards in better shape, too.

Lowe said volunteer youth from a local Rotary Club will be rolling up their sleeves to help with the painting efforts.

Lowe is head of a planning committee that hopes to renew the small town’s historical fall celebration, which was skipped last year due to lack of interest. The planning committee will be meeting soon to discuss ideas for the festival, she said.
