Court grants continuance in Burden chief case

A court appearance for embattled Burden chief of police Travis Lowe, set for this week, was pushed to early February at the request of his attorney.

Lowe was to appear in court Wednesday at which time he was likely to have been arraigned on a count of domestic battery, or in the alternative simple battery. Instead, his attorney contacted the court Tuesday and was granted a continuance according to Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith.

Lowe’s next appearance was rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. Feb. 1.

Lowe was arrested in November after a domestic incident in which is he accused of striking his wife. He was on paid administrative leave for about a month before the Burden city council voted to place him on unpaid leave, pending the outcome of his case.

Smith would not speak to the specifics of Lowe’s case, but said a misdemeanor domestic battery charge can threaten the career of a law enforcement officer.

“The way I understand the law, is that even just entering a diversion program for domestic battery means you’re done as a police officer in the state of Kansas,” Smith said.
