Police: Teen was hiding out in occupied home

An Ark City teen ? on the run from authorities ? sneaked into a home and hid in the laundry room, while a resident of the home slept in a backroom of the house early Sunday, authorities said.

Officers were investigating a car parked in the 1400 block of N. Ninth when the juvenile took off running when sighted by officers. The boy’s name has not been released because of his age.

Ark City police provided a written account of the incident in a statement released Thursday.

A search for the suspect led to a home on N. 10th Ave. where police found an open window and what appeared to be a window screen that had been removed. The resident of the home could not immediately be contacted but entered the home to begin a search for the suspect.

The teen was found hiding in the laundry room and the owner was found to be sleeping in a backroom. Testing determined he had been drinking alcohol.

Police later determined that the boy was the same person reported to have been asking multiple people for a ride at the Red Zone bar earlier in the evening. The suspect told police that he initially ran because someone from the bar was chasing him and the home provided a safe place to hide.

Witnesses at the Red Zone told police they hadn’t seen anyone chasing the suspect. During questioning, the suspect became confrontational and spit on and attempted to bite an officer.

He was taken to the Cowley County Jail and later referred to juvenile intake.

Possible charges include aggravated burglary, minor in consumption of alcohol, assault on a law enforcement officer and batter on a law enforcement officer.
