A Winfield home sustained smoke damage ? that was mostly confined to the basement area ? from a small fire that started Tuesday afternoon.
Fire personnel were called to 12th and Broadway just after 3 p.m. for the report of a structure fire. A neighbor heard what sounded like a car backfiring, saw smoke coming from the house and called 911.
A family lives in the home, according to fire marshal Alan Stoll, but no one had been home for several hours when the fire started.
There was considerable smoke at the scene and crews worked spent considerable time clearing the air in the house. However, damage to main level of the home was considered minor, Stoll said.
