Authorities identify man killed by falling car

UPDATE: 10:21 a.m. Thursday – Stephen C. Garringer, 28, was identified as the man killed Tuesday.

The accident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. just south of Udall on Cowley 3. Garringer was originally reported to be 29 but a written report of the incident indicates he was 28.

A person died Tuesday afternoon when a vehicle he was working on apparently slipped off a jack and landed on top of the him, according to Cowley County Sheriff Don Read.

The accident occurred in the 8800 block of 21st Rd., also known as Cowley 3, just south of Udall. A man ? who has not been identified by name ? was pronounced dead at the scene by first responder medical personnel.

Read said the man, 29, was a self-employed mechanic working on a vehicle. One end of the vehicle was on jack stands when the accident occurred.

The man apparently disengaged the drive shaft, causing the vehicle to roll back off the jack stands and onto him, Read said. Crushing injuries to the torso are believed to be the cause of death.
