Udall Mayor Lette easily survives recall effort

Udall Mayor Chris Lette isn’t going anywhere.

Voters, by a two-to-one margin, chose to keep their mayor, who was the subject of a recall petition that put the question of his ouster on the ballot. A total of 178 people voted against recall Tuesday, while 88 voted for it.

City council president Bob Clasen was at the Cowley County Courthouse as votes were counted. He would’ve become mayor had Lette been booted from office, but Clasen said he didn’t want the job.

Instead he praised Lette’s work in office and was critical of those who brought the issue to a vote.

Organizers of the recall petition had accused Lette of improprieties in office that he has vehemently denied.
