Man is arrested for shots fired at Winfield apts

(Editor’s note: Police issued a press release on the incident and now indicate the weapon involved was a handgun.)

A Winfield man was arrested early Friday after firing off several rounds at Silverwood Apartments on E. 12th., police said this morning.

Around 1 a.m., officers responded to the apartment complex for a report of shots fired. Evidence was found indicating that as many as 20 rounds had been discharged, police chief Danny Parker said.

Multiple 911 reports were received.

Matthew Sanders, 23, – a man believed to be a resident of the apartments – was quickly identified as a suspect and questioned. Sanders was described in a report as uncooperative and is said to have offered multiple reasons for firing the gun, which was a 22.

"The reasons he gave changed," Parker said. "The excuses he gave didn’t exactly make sense."

A car in the parking lot of the apartments sustained minor damage as a result of shots fired. Parker said a survey of the scene after sunrise produced no evidence of additional damage.

It is unclear if the shots were fired into the air or at a specific target.

Sanders is facing charges that could include criminal damage to property, criminal discharge of a firearm and obstruction of the legal process.

He remains in the Cowley County Jail and has not been fully processed into the jail system, according to a spokesperson. At the moment, his bail is set at $2,500.
