Preliminary hearings are scheduled this week for two local cases that NewsCow has been following.
At 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Cole Hartung will have his preliminary hearing at the county courthouse in Winfield. Hartung is a convicted felon who was picked up on drug charges early in July.
Preliminary hearings give defendants a chance to hear the prosecution’s evidence against them. There is no jury and a judge determines if enough evidence exists to proceed to trial.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Friday for Michael L. Whitesell, of Winfield. He is accused of beating up a mentally challenged man at a local bar this spring.
Whitesell had fled to Colorado. He was arrested by authorities there and returned to Cowley County in July.
