Safe Homes to open new local shelter Oct. 1

Safe Homes Inc. has announced the reopening of a local shelter to serve victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The shelter will open Oct. 1.

Representatives of the Kansas Attorney General’s office will be in Ark City Sept. 30 to help celebrate the opening. Safe Homes had been without a Cowley County safe shelter since closing a facility in spring of 2009.

As it has in the past, Safe Homes is keeping the location of the shelter secret for safety purposes.

A ribbon cutting will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Ark City Chamber office.

Vic Braden – deputy state attorney general and lead prosecutor in the trial of Justin Thurber – is expected to attend, along with Dorothy Halley Stucky, director of the attorney general’s victim services division.

Additional events are planned in Winfield and Wellington during October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

"We are excited to have the shelter reopen and ready to serve the survivors in our community," said LeeAnn Riediger, Director of Operations and Finance for Safe Homes. "The shelter is an important piece of our programming, and one that is needed in our community."

Safe Homes provides direct support and services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in south-central Kansas.
