Argument between groups leads to gun shots

UPDATE: 11 a.m. Monday ? Cowley County Sheriff Don Read said it’s not yet clear if charges will be filed in connection with shots fired south of Winfield Sunday. No one was injured and no arrests have been made.

The incident occurred just before 7 p.m.

An argument ? which began at the Jump Start on Main in Winfield ? intensified when a male subject told another man to meet him at his house to settle the disagreement.

The main argument was between a 19-year-old resident of a home in Pleasant Valley and a 21-year-old man, though a number of others were involved to some degree or another. No one has been named publicly because no formal charges have been filed.

The gun was fired when someone retrieved a rifle from inside the Pleasant Valley home and fired shots in the air to clear the area. When an announcement was made that authorities had been called, many of those involved fled, Read said.

Statements have been collected in the case, but charges seem unlikely so far, the sheriff said.
