A Derby man is recovering from injuries suffered when his own car backed over him at Cowley College Saturday.
Dean Whittemore, 78, was taken to the hospital in Ark City and later transferred to Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita. He was listed in fair condition Tuesday afternoon, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Family answering the phone at his home said Whittemore should make a full recovery.
The accident occurred around 10 p.m as Whittemore and his wife were getting into the car in the parking lot of the college’s Brown Center following a performance, Ark City Police Capt. Tom Scott said.
Mrs. Whittemore fell ill just before getting into the car and her husband went to her side to assist her. The car either never was in park or slipped into gear and struck Dean Whittemore.
He complained of leg, back and hip pain at the scene.
