AC school district observing bus safety week

Ark City school officials are stressing the important job bus drivers do as the district observes National School Bus Safety Week this week.

Transportation staff were recognized during a appreciation luncheon Wednesday. The district estimates that drivers of USD 470’s 17 buses transport 850 students a day and travel nearly 200,000 miles per year.

"Student safety is our top priority and our transportation personnel are essential to keeping kids safe," Asst. Superintendent J.K. Campbell says. "We want to recognize them and thank them for all their continuous hard work."

District officials remind motorists approaching a stopped school bus that they must stop before reaching the bus. The motorist should remain stopped until the bus stop sign is retracted and the flashing red lights are turned off.

Students should always stay at least 10 feet away from the bus ? out of the danger zone – and should always be alert to other traffic when entering and exiting the school bus.
