159 fell ill: Probe into turkey dinner continuing

State and county health officials are continuing to investigate an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness linked to a turkey dinner served at Ark City’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church Nov. 8.

At least 159 people reported becoming sick and one person was hospitalized. For most, symptoms faded and their conditions improved within a day or two.

Symptoms complained of include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping.

The Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment and City-Cowley Health Dept. are investigating. The state is urging anyone who ate the turkey dinner, regardless of whether they fell ill, to complete this survey.

"It’s really important that everyone who attended the dinner or consumed food prepared for the event complete this survey or contact the health department," said Dr. Jason Eberhart-Phillips, Kansas State Health Officer and Director of KDHE’s Division of Health. "Regardless of whether you’ve become sick, the information you provide will help us better understand what may have caused this gastrointestinal outbreak."

If you have any questions or need assistance in completing this survey please contact City-Cowley County Health Department at 620-221-1430 or KDHE epidemiology hotline at 877-427-7317.???
