Smith: No decision on charges in Lowe case

No final decision has been made in regard to filing charges against Burden Chief of Police Travis Lowe, Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith said.

Smith has requested that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation complete an investigation into the matter before Smith decides whether to file charges. It’s not uncommon to contact an outside agency to investigate cases involving local law enforcement officers.

"We don’t want people to have any doubt that this was handled in a fair and proper manner," Smith said.

There will be a few interviews to conduct with parties involved before a decision on charges is made, Smith said.

Lowe, 39, is facing a misdemeanor domestic battery charge based on a disturbance at a residence in Burden. Sheriff’s officers were called to the disturbance, and Lowe was arrested.

The woman involved did not require medical treatment following the incident, Smith said, when asked about the severity of any injuries.

Lowe was arrested Nov. 21 around 11:30 p.m. and booked into the county jail before being released on $750 bond. The city of Burden placed him on administrative leave with pay.
