County OKs a burn ban; starting Wednesday

Due to recent dry and windy conditions, Cowley County commissioners have approved a burn ban that will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday and continue through Jan. 4.

Brian Stone, the county’s emergency management coordinator, could lift the ban if conditions improve sooner.

The ban includes the controlled burning of grass, weeds, brush, trees, debris or trash, solid-fuel cooking appliances and campfires within the unincorporated areas of the county.

Exceptions have been made for fires built in a permanent outdoor stove or fireplace and fires in barbecue grills in recreational areas or residential lawns.

Prescribed burning for crop production or grassland management is exempted if the property owner or lessee notifies the fire chief prior to the burning beginning and notifies the chief again when burning is complete.
