Electrical problems are thought to be the cause of fire found burning in the wall of an Ark City home Tuesday evening, Ark City fire Capt. Jon Cannon said.
Around 7:35 p.m., a resident of the home called to report a fire at 325 N. Third. Fire crews arrived to find smoke pouring from attic vents of the house.
The resident reported that some wires in the home were arcing and smoking near pipes in the home’s basement. Firefighters found fire burning inside the wall of a stairwell leading from the basement. The fire had started spreading to the attic.
A portion of the wall and ceiling was removed to gain access to the small fire, which was under control just before 9 p.m.
“There were people inside the home but they were able get out safely,” Cannon said.
The residents, he said, were fortunate the fire occurred at a time when people were home and not at work, or asleep.
A fire report listed Wesley Hickey as owner of the home.
